We’ve all been there. You are standing on a breathtaking beach in Mombasa. The ocean is a dazzling turquoise, the sand is white, and the palm trees are swaying perfectly. You snap a photo, convinced it’s going to be the cover of a travel magazine.
But when you look at your screen? The horizon is crooked, your family is squinting like they’ve just eaten a lemon, and there’s a random stranger in a bright orange swimsuit photobombing the background.
Capturing the magic of a coastal Christmas isn’t always as easy as “point and shoot.” The lighting is intense, the landscape is vast, and the festive vibes are unique (think sunblock instead of snow boots).
Whether you are a pro with a DSLR or a parent with a smartphone, we want to help you return home with memories that look as good as the moment felt. Here is your guide to capturing stunning holiday moments at Bahari Beach Hotel this festive season.
The number one rule of photography on the equator? Respect the sun.
Between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM, the sun is directly overhead. It casts harsh shadows under the eyes (giving everyone “raccoon eyes”) and bleaches out the beautiful colors of the ocean. Plus, it’s hot!
For the best shots, aim for the Golden Hour. This is the hour just after sunrise and the hour just before sunset.
The Morning Glow: Since Bahari Beach Hotel is located on the East Coast of Africa, we get spectacular sunrises over the Indian Ocean. If you can drag yourself out of our comfortable Rooms early enough, you’ll catch the sky turning purple and orange. The light is soft, flattering, and perfect for serene portraits.
The Evening Vibe: Late afternoon is when the coast comes alive. The heat breaks, the light turns gold, and the shadows get long and dramatic. This is the perfect time for silhouette shots against the water.

We know the view of the ocean from our cliff-top gardens is stunning. But a thousand photos of just water can get a little repetitive.
To truly capture the “festive spirit,” you need to introduce the human element. We are talking about candid moments.
Capture the splash of water as your kids jump into the pool.
Snap a photo of your partner laughing while trying to crack open a crab at dinner.
Get a close-up of the condensation dripping off a cold drink.
These “action shots” tell a story. According to the Kenya Tourism Board, travelers are increasingly looking for authentic experiences rather than staged perfection. So, don’t worry if the hair is messy or the kids are covered in sand—that’s real life, and that’s what makes the photo special.
This is a quick technical tip that makes a huge difference. When taking a picture of the beach, try not to put the horizon line right in the middle of the photo. It splits the image in half and can look a bit boring.
Instead, use the “Rule of Thirds.” Imagine a tic-tac-toe grid on your screen (most phones have this grid feature in settings).
If the sky is dramatic: Put the horizon on the bottom line to show off the clouds.
If the water is the star: Put the horizon on the top line to emphasize the ocean and the beach.
And please, for the love of art, keep that horizon straight! A tilted ocean looks like the water is about to slide off the planet.
You don’t have to go far to find the perfect backdrop. Our property in Nyali is designed to be picturesque. Here are a few spots you shouldn’t miss:
This is our signature view. From here, you can capture the panoramic sweep of the ocean without getting sand in your camera. It’s also the best spot for a group photo with the sea in the background.
Bahari has a distinct, old-world charm with its coral stone finishing. The textures of the walls make for a fantastic, rustic background for portraits that feel distinctly coastal.
The contrast between the bright blue pool and the lush green palms is striking. Grab a cocktail from the bar and snap a “cheers” photo—it’s the ultimate “wish you were here” flex for your social media friends back in the cold.
Food photography is a must during the holidays! When you visit our Dining areas for the festive buffet, get low and close to the food. The vibrant colors of Swahili curries, fresh fruits, and grilled seafood pop beautifully on camera.
How do you show it’s Christmas when there is no snow? You play with contrast.
There is something humorous and delightful about a Santa hat resting on a sunbed, or “Merry Christmas” written in the sand before the tide washes it away. Look for the decorations we put up around the hotel. We blend festive lights with tropical flora, creating a unique “tropical wonderland” aesthetic.
If you venture out, a photo of a camel on Nyali Beach wearing festive gear (yes, the handlers sometimes dress them up!) is a classic Mombasa shot. Just remember to ask for permission before photographing locals or their businesses, a standard courtesy reminded by travel guides like Lonely Planet.
This might sound strange coming from a photography guide, but our best advice is this: Don’t live your entire holiday through a lens.
Take the photo, check that it’s sharp, and then put the phone away. The best memories are the ones you feel, smell, and taste—the salty breeze, the sound of the waves, the taste of a majestic meal.
Photography is about capturing a moment, not interrupting it. So, get the shot, and then get back to enjoying your Experience with us.
